VINTAGE....

You may already be familiar with some types of port: ruby, tawny, LBV, etc. This isn't easy in Belgium, as the most popular port here is and remains the often mediocre ruby ??from well-known mass-market brands (not to mention Sandeman). However, the very best port is the "vintage"!

- Vintages can be released every year. The producer submits a sample of their best port to the Porto Institute ("Instuto do Vinho de Porto"). This port is only recognized as a vintage if it meets a whole series of requirements.

- Due to the particularly strict requirements, there are also years in which no brand succeeds in releasing a vintage. QSO succeeded in 2004 with this VINTAGE 2004.

- It's not so much the production, but rather the correct selection that makes achieving a vintage very difficult (a tawny is more difficult in some respects because it needs to be properly aged in barrels).

- In its first two or three years, a vintage is fruity and attractive. It tends towards a very successful ruby ??or a young LBV. After that, the aromas close until they open up again, 20 years later… This is therefore the minimum period to let this port rest.

- According to vintage expert James Suckling, the time is ripe to crack a vintage from 1963, 1966, or 1970!

- Wealthy Brits and Americans are currently the biggest buyers of vintage ports. A 30-, 40-, or 50-year-old vintage from an exceptionally good year can easily cost several hundred euros. Not a bad investment then… (even if it were for your grandchildren)

Background: Quinta Seara d’Ordens

Wine has been produced at Quinta Seara d’Ordens since 1792. The quinta is located near Poiares in the Douro, Cima Corgo, a few kilometers from Peso de Régua. At the end of the 18th century, the quinta was purchased by the Leite family. The owner was so enamored of the quinta and its 60-hectare estate that he decided to invest heavily by planting olive and almond trees. He also planted a few hectares with traditional red grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Touriga Franca.

In 1980, a new 15-hectare vineyard was established, using the same traditional red grape varieties for red and rosé wine, and Malvasia Fina, Fernão Pires, Rabigato, and Cerceal for white wine.

Throughout the centuries, Quinta Seara d’Ordens has been passed down from father to son, and in 1988, the three brothers, António, Fernando, and José Moreiro, were able to continue the tradition. They decided to create 50-meter-long terraces on the remaining 45 hectares of land and plant them with traditional grape varieties. The terraces proved to be a great success, preventing erosion and improving the distribution of rainwater.

In 1992, the brothers released their first Quinta Seara d’Ordens wine. Nowadays, in addition to their highly successful wines, they also produce a superb range of Ports that have won numerous international awards over the past 15 years. The company remains artisanal and small-scale, and is increasingly establishing itself in the exclusive top segment.
